99681 - HARBOUR GEOTECHNICS

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Offshore Engineering (cod. 9249)

Learning outcomes

The module addresses the geotechnical issues in the design of harbour structures and infrastructures like quays and breakwaters, land reclamation and bank protection.

Course contents

In this course, students will delve into the fundamental theories for the design of harbour infrastructures on the geotechnical standpoint. The course focuses on the design and analysis of structures critical to maritime infrastructure (inner and and external port structures).

The lectures include:

  • Introduction to inner and external (protection) harbour geotechnical structures
  • Theory of lateral earth pressure
  • Stability analysis of harbour walls (inner port structures)
  • Stability analysis of protection works (breakwaters)

Readings/Bibliography

The documents for supporting the learning process will be made available to the students during the course.

Teaching methods

The lectures are presented with the aid of slides and integrated with demonstrations at the board. Practical examples are illustrated during the course.

Lectures and/or seminars by invited foreign professors can be included.

Assessment methods

The comptences acquired during the course will be assessed through an oral exam about the course's contents.

Higher grades will be awarded to students who can demonstrate an organic understanding of the subject, a capacity of presenting the course contents in a clear and concise way and an ability of critically discussing the results achieved. To obtain a passing grade, students are required to show their knowledge of at least the key concepts of the subject, some ability for their critical application and a correct use of technical language.

Teaching tools

Lecture notes will be made available on Virtuale, together with some additional documentations of recent research outcomes in the field.
