Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will be able to know and propose the didactic and academic resources of the Italian Literature, whose disciplinary contents will be valued for text analysis as well as for the literary history and the relationship between literature and society.

Course contents

Didactics of Italian Literature is not another course of Italian Literature but a course about how to teach Italian Literature in secondary schools and other places. At the same time to teach means also to re-read what we already know with an eye towards who expects from us precision and solid knowledge but also to share the real experience. Teaching is above all a real encounter with the Italian Literature, its classics, its texts, its history, and geography. The course is divided in three parts:

I module: Analysis of the text

We learned the text analysis in the two first years of the upper secondary school, we forgot it in the following three years, and then studied it again in the university. Now we find ourselves to teach it and to make students see what they do not see at the first sight. Not necessarily the analysis of a sonnet should be the first moment of the textual analysis, as in my teaching experience it is easier to teach the basics of rhetorical and metrical analysis on the examples of extracts of advertising material, films, political discourses, and broadcasts of sports events.

II module: Correspondences from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment

Lucrezia Borgia, Isabella d'Este, Niccolò Machiavelli, Pietro l'Aretino, Pietro Bembo, Cassandra Chigi, Maria Mancini, Manon Balletti, Giacomo Casanova, aristocrats and writers but also actresses and adventurers in an epistolary world where the life runs between the clock of the moment and the fear to be forgotten, but is still rich of descriptions, clarifications, endless polemics and leaves, as well as words that cannot be told in that particular way.

III module: Literature, Theatre, Cinema

At school theatre and cinema are servants of literature, or better, its Cinderellas. The musical drama is not taught, whereas the auteur cinema rarely and only when it deals with the topics related to school. “There is no time, we have to keep up with the programme, there would be many fine things, but alas…” But for many aspects one can say that the Italian Literature has always had close relationships with theatre and cinema, from the season of melodrama to that of neorealism.

The classes will take place starting from 1 October 2019 very Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, from 17.00 to 19.00 in Aula Pascoli, ground floor, via Zamboni 32.

Assessment methods

EARNING TESTS MODALITY

The test will be carried out by oral exam and conversation and will be eventually integrated by a multimedia didactic presentation. The content of the course and the didactic finalities make the exam the occasion to highlight, through the obtained competences, the predisposition to the specific didactic of the Italian literature.

Example of the evaluation range:

30 with honor:

Thorough knowledge of the contents of the bibliography and of the lessons, a precise and appropriate critical language, already inclined to the best didactic efficacy.

28-30:

Thorough knowledge of the bibliography and of the content of the lessons expressed by a precise and appropriate critical language with significant didactic clarity.

24-27:

Thorough knowledge of the bibliography and of the content of the lessons. Critical language with some inaccuracy and sometimes incongruous to the subject, presence of excessive simplifications during the exposition.

18-23:

Knowledge sometimes uncertain of the contents of the bibliography and of the lessons. Critical language presenting generalizations and incongruities. Presence of simplifications partially inadequate to the content of the exposition.

INVITE TO REPEAT THE TEST:

Serious failings in texts of the bibliography and in the subject of the lessons.
