Learning outcomes

Students show an advanced competency in the Russian language that allows them to move confidently in all communicative spheres as well as to carry out their professional activities in Russian-speaking contexts. They know the morphosyntactic structures of the language in a deepened way and are familiar with the lexical, stylistic and pragmatic analysis of great complexity oral and written texts that may include substandard and specialized languages. Their linguistic competence progress indicatively up to the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference, which allows students to effectively interpret the partner-linguistic and cultural codes in any subject within a communicative relationship.

Course contents

The first part of the course (20 hours) includes the analysis of a socio-cultural text from a morpho-syntactical and argumentative perspective. An in-depth study of morpho-syntactical aspects of particular complexity will be carried out and specifically the various ways of forming words in Russian, like neologisms, loanwords and syntactical constructions with the necessary punctuation in simple and complete sentences.

In the second half of the course (20 hours) teaching will focus on the analysis of Russian textual typologies. An examination will be made of discursive stylistics.

The third part on the course (20 hours) includes the business correspondence: typology, structure, linguistic constructions.

The theoretical part of this course also includes written and oral language exercises (lectureship 36 hours). These latter represent an integral part of the course and are designed to help students to develop their dialogical (oral) and compositional (written) skills at a B2 /C1 level regarding the subjects under study. The practical part of the course students will work on the vocabulary and phraseology pertinent to the texts being studied. Knowledge of the world in terms of such relative activities as documentation techniques and letter-writing will be enriched.

Mother-tongue Russian students and those not actively attending the course will need to agree on a personalized programme of study with the teacher.

Assessment methods

Final assessment consists of two parts: a written test followed by an oral exam aimed at testing speaking skills. Passing the written test has validity for four sessions and represents a pre-requisite for enrolment in the oral exam. Final marks will be officially recorded and are made up of the average of marks obtained in both the written and oral exams including the language test relating to the reading course.

Writing will hinge on: a) the analysis of a compatible text as well as those texts analyzed in lessons and on a summary, b) a business letter to write with the help of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries.

For the oral test, students will have to choose and prepare a text to analyze from a socio-cultural perspective. They will also have to justify their choice having agreed it with the teacher prior to the test.

NB: To be able to sit the Russian Linguistics 2 (LSC) exam, students will have to have already taken and passed Russian Linguistics 1 (LSC).
