75362 - Gender and Violence in the Old Germanic Literatures

Academic Year 2022/2023

Learning outcomes

The student already knows the old Germanic literatures and investigates the relation between gender and violence in the texts of the Nibelungs Cycle and in the modern rewriting of the Nibelung legend.

Course contents

This course examines one of the masterpieces of medieval German literature, Parzival, composed by Wolfram von Eschenbach in the early 13th century. It is probably the courtly text par excellence, in which Wolfram combines the themes and structure of the Arthurian romance with the Christian theme of the Grail; at the centre we find the figure of the young Parzival, whose spiritual growth is the main thread of the story. After a historical background, in which the outlines of the so-called "Swabian Age" will be traced, we will consider the sources used by the author and then analyse the text in terms of its narratological structure and content.
