69619 - DESIGN OF FIBER OPTIC SYSTEMS

Academic Year 2017/2018

Learning outcomes

Note: This course is taken from the First-cycle Degree in Ingegneria Elettronica e Telecomunicazioni, taught in Italian.

Course contents

Operations performed by the main optical devices and components.

Engineering aspects and fundamental guidelines for the design of Optical Fiber Systems.

Optical Fiber Transmission of digital and radiofrequency signals. Basic structure of Fiber To The Home (FTTH) networks and of Radio Over Fiber (RoF) systems.

Computer design of basic Optical Fiber Transmission Systems.

Readings/Bibliography

G. Keiser, Optical Fiber Communications, Mc Graw Hill

D. M. Pozar, Microwave Engineering, Ed. John Wiley & Sons, New York

Teaching methods

About half of the course will be taught through classical frontal lectures. The other half of the course will consist in laboratory activities.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of two parts wich take place one immediately after the other:

- a computer exercise, carried out alongside the examiner, which tests the student's familiarity with Fiber-To-The-Home Optical Network Design.

- an oral interview which tests the assimilation of the theoretical concepts on which the contents of the Course are based

Teaching tools

Software "Quantum GIS" for the design of Fiber To The Home Systems.
