Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is able to identify the mechanisms and characteristics of radioactive decays, knows the basics of measurement of radioactivity and has the knowledge of the main applications of nuclear chemistry (medicine, energy production, environmental protection).

Course contents

Atomic nucleus - nuclear binding energy - nuclear models - instability of the nucleus and energy - nuclide chart - nuclear decay (alpha, beta and gamma) - equation of decay - nuclear metrology (definition of activity) - interaction of radiation with matter - detection and measurement of radioactivity with experimental tests in the lab - radiation protection dosimetry - environmental radioactivity - nuclear energy and safety - nuclear medicine: diagnosis and therapy with a visit to the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Hospital S. Orsola
