Anno Accademico 2023/2024

  • Docente: Francesco Dondi
  • Crediti formativi: 3
  • SSD: VET/08
  • Lingua di insegnamento: Inglese
  • Modalità didattica: Convenzionale - Lezioni in presenza
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Laurea Magistrale in Food Animal Metabolism and Management in the Circular Economy (cod. 5814)

Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

At the end of the module, students have learned which haematochemical performance indicators are useful to evaluate the metabolic balance of ruminants, pigs, chickens, and fishes. In addition, students are prepared to perform samples of biological material. Finally, students are prepared to perform laboratory analysis on blood and other biological samples.

Contenuti

Basic concepts of hematology, clinical chemistry and other laboratory evaluations applied to the assement of animal production

Testi/Bibliografia

1) Schalm's Veterinary Hematology (Wiley-Blackwell 2010)

2) Stockham and Scott. Fundamentals of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (Blackwell 2008)

3) Scientific journal articles on selected topics

Metodi didattici

The course will be organized in frontal lessons and practices in groups in the clinical pathology laboratory. Online activities can also be planned.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

The final evaluation is aimed at defining the achievement of the following training objectives:

- basic hematology

- clinical chemistry: renal function, liver integrity, electrolytes and selected metabolic pathways

- acute phase reactants linked to diseases and stressors

This module is part of the integrated course “Clinical and pharmacological issues in intensive animal production”. At the end of the two modules, a test consisting of 30 multiple choice questions will be planned, allowing to verify the knowledge of the student on all the topics covered during the integrated course. The examination will last 60 minutes, each correct answer gives 1 point.

Students can enroll themselves to the test using the online system Alma Esami (http://almaesami.unibo.it/almaesami/welcome.htm).  In case of failure, students may sit the exam again after at least three weeks.

Strumenti a supporto della didattica

Slideshow presentations will be used during frontal lessons, together with videos.

Work group for lab activities and for literature analysis and re-elaboration.
