Learning outcomes
The course gives a practical approach on the field to several arguments studied in previous courses concerning Geology, Geomorphology, Botany and Zoology. The approach is carried out in bottom valley (600-900 m) and middle altitude areas (1400-2000 m). Aim of the field-work is to yield several and various data useful to produce original reports.
Course contents
Practice on the field: surveys and exercises.
Botanic contents. Identification of plant species in nature by diagnostic characters. Observation of the main forms of vegetation present, their structure, composition and plant diversity. Realization of vegetational surveys. Floristic and vegetational samplings in the sub-alpine, montane and sub-montane belt; b) plant indentification by manuals and keys; c) ecological and phytogeographical analysis of sampled data and storage in a data base; d) integration of biotic results with geo-litological data and final summary.
Geological and geomorphological contents. Bottom valley areas: Quaternary deposit analysis and site evolution, mapping geology (1:25.000 scale), fluvial altimetric profile, pebble litologies of fluvial gravels, hydrogeological risk; relationship between Quaternary deposit typologies and vegetal covers. Middle altitude areas: litology of substratum, mapping geology at 1:10.000 scale, macro- and meso- deformation stuctures (folds and faults), karst surficial elements; relationship between substratum lithology and vegetal covers.
Readings/Bibliography
Lectures suggested by teachers during the field experience.
Teaching methods
During the field experience teachers give explanations, motivate the students, guide their observations, check their data notebooks advising, suggesting and judging.
Assessment methods
Drafting of scientific statements illustrating the botanic, zoological, geological and geomorphological data and interpretations related to the arguments observed and learned.
Teaching tools
Compass, Stereo-microscope, Floristic Manuals, Topographic and thematic Maps provided by teachers.
