Course contents

Communication of complexity. From medicine to climate change

The workshop will be led by Dr. Alessandra Ferretti, who deals with scientific communication and communication of complexity, in particular with applications in the fields of medicine, healthcare and the environment. For several years she has dealt with these topics in her writing and publications, teaching to communicators and doctors and practical applications in the healthcare-institutional and healthcare-hospital fields.

The workshop intends to provide basic knowledge of the theory of complexity and its application in scientific communication towards the general public. At the end of the course, the students willk now the topics of complex systems as we perceive them around us and how they were studied by scientific developments between the 18th and 20th centuries; know the main theories of scientific communication towards the general public and will be able to identify the critical issues that can emerge in a communication path in the context of today's hyper-connected and hyper-technological society; be able to produce content in the form of a written text and oral interventions for the purpose of scientific communication towards an expert audience, scientific communication towards a general public, crisis and risk communication.

The course will consist of a theory part and practical application and simulation. The two methods will go hand in hand and we will proceed by theme, ranging from science communication to crisis communication, institutional communication, management communication and so on.

For the individual themes listed, case studies will be analysed on which the discussion will be based, which should be highly interactive, and on which practical exercises will be carried out. The main cases in which the communication of complexity will be analysed include: Covid-19 and pandemics; the Seveso case; the maxi-hospital emergency; science on television; circular health and One Health; Climate change; artificial intelligence.
