Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will achieve an exhaustive knowledge of Italian Literature from the 16th to the 18th century.

Course contents

The course is divided into two sections:

A. RESEARCH UNIT: The Baroque and the Scientific Revolution. Marino and Galileo

B. HISTORICAL UNIT: history of Italian literature from the 16th to the 18th century

The research unit, taught by the lecturer, is dedicated to the in-depth study of specific topics of particular historic and literary relevance; the institutional part, conducted as individual study, concerns literary history from the 16th to the 18th century (B.1) and includes the analytical reading of at least two classics of the Italian tradition, to be freely chosen from the list below (B.2). In addition, the reading of at least one critical or philological essay is required, to be chosen from the list of titles below (B.3).

The duration of the course is 60 hours (30 lessons of two hours each).

B.1 An adequate knowledge of Italian literary history from the 16th to the 18th century is required. The following textbooks are recommended for preparation:

Teaching methods

Lectures in which the course topics will be developed, with reading and analytical commentary on literary texts.

Assessment methods

The evaluation of the students' competencies and abilities acquired during the course consists in an oral interview which has the aim of evaluating the critical and methodological ability of the students. The students will be invited to discuss the tests on the course programme. The student must demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme.

Those students who are able to demonstrate a wide and systematic understanding of the issues covered during the lessons, are able to use these critically and who master the field-specific language of the discipline will be given a mark of excellence.

Those students who demonstrate a mnemonic knowledge of the subject with a more superficial analytical ability and ability to synthesize, a correct command of the language but not always appropriate, will be given a fair mark.

A superficial knowledge and understanding of the material, a scarce analytical and expressive ability that is not always appropriate will be rewarded with a pass mark or just above a pass mark.

Students who demonstrate gaps in their knowledge of the subject matter, inappropriate language use, lack of familiarity with the literature in the programme bibliography will not be given a pass mark.

There you can find explanatory sheets, literary texts, commentaries on the texts, historical and cultural introductions to the works, biographies of the authors, various materials and additional links. Some of them will be used during the lessons.
