Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will know the main events that led to the construction of the modern and contemporary city and the key figures who interpreted its character. He/she will be able to place these events in their contemporary historical and cultural framework and in the subsequent historiographical narrative. In addition, he/she will be able to analyse, comparatively, the proposed case studies by placing them in the geographical context of reference.

Course contents

The course aims to propose a reflection on the industrial city of the 20th century with an in-depth study of European company towns, i.e. the relationship between the theme of living and that of industrial (or mining) settlement.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises. During the course, students are asked to develop a collective graphic exercise to compare the settlement patterns of the main European company towns and the villes minières in Morocco.

Assessment methods

In accordance with the other Lab courses, during the oral examination the student is required to present the exercise developed during the course.

Teaching tools

Lessons will take place with constant use of graphic and photographic material, which will be presented through video projections. The teaching material will be accessible from the dedicated page on the 'Virtual' platform.
