Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student possesses a preparation that allows him to understand the methodological bases of Basic Information Technology, with particular regard to the aspects relating to the processing architectures of computer systems and the software necessary for their operation. In particular, the student is able to: • know the different functional architectures of an electronic computer; • know the criteria by which the computing performance of IT systems is assessed; • describe the functional blocks of a computer and be able to associate the corresponding physical devices with them; • describe the methods of numerical representation in binary and decimal systems and the type of data circulating in a computer; • recognize the different methods of data transfer in an electronic computer and the input and output flows generated by the processing; • distinguish the different types and functionalities of the operating systems available for an electronic computer; • describe the various categories of possible processing (primary and service); • know the main network connection architectures of electronic computers and the structure of the Internet; • describe the protocols and data transmission methods and the main software services available on the network; • configure a computer for its connection to a local network and be able to use the main office automation and internetworking software; • use the basic methodologies for securing IT systems;

Course contents

The operating systems and basic information systems for the management, processing and archiving of clinical and radiographic data of patients will be presented. The methods of use of text processing software aimed at reporting and archiving the patient's clinical data will also be presented, as well as software for creating databases for research purposes.
The software available on the net, applicable in daily dental practice will be analyzed: e.g. bibliographic research, radiographic processing.
