Learning outcomes

The student knows the basic elements of Chinese literary civilization, is able to identify them in specific literary texts, is able to independently develop further knowledge and literary skills at a higher level and also to apply them to other literary texts.

Course contents

This course aims to provide the basics of pre-modern Chinese literature, covering a period spanning from the era of the Warring States to the fall of the Empire. Students will study the birth and development of literature in the cultural and social context of the various stages of Chinese history, and will have the opportunity to engage with various types of literary texts (poetry, essay, short story, novel, etc.).

The contents of the course are divided into two parts. The first part will tackle the history of literature and will cover the following topics: the literature of ancient China, the literature of the Han Dynasty, the literature of the Tang Dynasty, the literature of the Five Dynasties period, the literature of the Yuan Dynasty, and the literature of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The second part of the course will be devoted to the critical reading and analysis of the classic novels: The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Water Margin, Jin Ping Mei, The Journey to the West, The Dream of the Red Chamber. These texts - in Italian or English translation - will be read and commented upon in class.

Teaching methods

The first part of the course will consist of mainly lectures, while in the second part, the students' active participation in reading and analyzing the assigned texts will be encouraged.

Assessment methods

The final exam will be an oral test in which the knowledge acquired during the course will be evaluated.
