Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student - understands the phenomenon of the ageing population from the point of view of the Educational Sciences; - knows the system of educational services aimed at the elderly; - knows, analyses and evaluates intergenerational projects and services; - knows and applies in a planning sense the socio-educational intervention models for the third age; - can analyse the contribution of empirical educational research in the field of services for the elderly; - can design educational interventions aimed at an elderly target group; - can construct evaluation tools for educational interventions aimed at the elderly; - can analyse and evaluate educational services, projects and processes for the third age.

Course contents

The course is designed to provide knowledge and skills for the design and implementation of educational interventions giving answer to the psychosocial needs of the frail and non-self-sufficient elderly, in complementarity with care pathways.
The topics covered are
- services for the third age and care professions;
- the new paradigms of care in a bio-psycho-social perspective (Culture Change Movement, Person-centred Approach, Gentle Care, Validation, Montessori, etc.);
- the analysis of behavioural occurrences from a systemic and multidimensional perspective;
- the educational interventions for frail and non-self-sufficient elderly:
- history and meaning of educational intervention for elderly care
- traditional and innovative education approaches and methodologies
- care work from a social and educational perspective (prevention of burn out, improvement of relations between the work team)
- methods and tools for monitoring and assessing the quality of the social and health service network
- projects that are active in the panorama of the Bologna Local Health Unit's services.

Teaching methods

The course envisages the adoption of teaching methods based on experiential learning, starting from analysis and comparison with third age care projects . In addition to lectures, which will be functional to consolidate the core knowledge, again through active teaching, the following will be proposed: expert testimonies, case studies, visits to services and project work.

Assessment methods

The final examination consists of the realisation of a project work and its presentation and oral discussion. Detailed information on this activity will be provided at the beginning of the course.
