Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Digital Innovation Policies and Governance (cod. 5889)

Learning outcomes

Students will gain practical problem-solving skills using specialized software tools and understand various machine learning models and training mechanisms.

Course contents

The course consists of two parts.
The first part is mainly concerned with symbolic artificial intelligence and covers, at a high level, the following topics:

  • Introduction to artificial intelligence
  • Intelligent agents
  • Search and constraint satisfaction problems
  • Decision support systems
  • Knowledge representation and reasoning

The second part is mainly concerned with machine learning and sub-symbolic artificial intelligence. The topics covered are:

  • Machine learning
  • Deep learning
  • Natural language processing
  • Artificial vision
  • Ethics and safety of artificial intelligence

Readings/Bibliography

  • Russell, Stuart J. Artificial intelligence a modern approach. Pearson Education, Inc., 2021.
  • Wallace, Mark. Building decision support systems: using MiniZinc. Cham: Springer, 2020

Teaching methods

The course consists of frontal lectures and on-going exercises on the covered topics.

Assessment methods

The acquired skills will be assessed by a written exam and a small project, to be agreed with students and possibly done in groups.

Teaching tools

Slides from each lecture will be provided. The syllabus follows at a high level the book "Russell, Stuart J. Artificial intelligence a modern approach", however, this book is not necessary to follow the course or take the exam. Practical exercises will be conducted. Generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT or Midjourney will be used during the course.
