37188 - Histology and Embryology Laboratory (C2)

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 5906)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is familiar in the laboratory with various methodological procedures, including histochemistry and immuno-histochemistry, suitable for the study of cellular and subcellular structures under the light microscope. In particular, the student is able to recognize the morphological aspects that allow the diagnosis of the various human tissues, in their peculiarities.

Course contents

Techniques for histological preparations: optical and electronic microscopy. Recognition of the epithelial lining, exocrine and endocrine glandular tissues under an optical microscope; proper connective tissue (mature mucous, loose fibrillar, reticular, elastic, dense, unilocular and multilocular adipose); cartilage (hyaline, fibrous and elastic); bone tissue (non-lamellar and spongy and compact lamellar; tooth: cement and dentin; direct and indirect ossification), blood and lymphatic tissue; muscle tissue (smooth, skeletal and cardiac striatum) and nervous tissue (in the central and peripheral nervous system).

Teaching methods

The lessons include projections of histological preparations used to explain the recognition strategies of the same. Moreover, some hours will be done directly in laboratory to take confidence with microscope activity.

Assessment methods

The assessment consists of a practical microscopy test by which the teacher will be able to verify the candidate's ability to recognize histological sections.

Teaching tools

The teaching materials presented during lessons will be available to the students in electronic format.
