14041 - Biochemistry Lab-based Course (A-K 4)

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 5904)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student acquires methodological and applicative elements useful for integrating the knowledge gained during the Biochemistry course.

Course contents

The theoretical-practical biochemistry laboratories are conducted using dedicated computers and software.

-Energetic coupling and ATP production by oxidative phosphorylation: measurement of respiration rate in isolated cells and mitochondria by oxygraphic analysis. Calculation of the rate of oxygen consumption under conditions of maximum ADP phosphorylation rate (state 3) and "rest": state 4 respiration. Evaluation of energetic coupling’s level by V(state3)/V(state4) ratio and of the phosphorylation efficiency by ATP/O calculation.

-The use of interactive software allows students to explore the molecular reasons of pathological states caused by alterations of cellular biosignaling processes. In conclusion, the laboratory activity completes the students' knowledge of metabolic biochemistry relevant for the purpose of understanding the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis and aspects of clinical diagnostics.

- The use of an exclusive and professional computer program aimed at developing a variety of specific dietary plans that can be used both for primary and secondary prevention purposes and for the treatment of different pathologies. The elaboration of the diets will be preceded by precise preparatory indications regarding the evaluation of the state of nutrition, body composition, body mass index, basal metabolic rate and total energy expenditure of a subject. The exercise cannot be repeated as the software, subject to periodic updating, can only be used on the computers of the Polo Murri IT room.

Readings/Bibliography

Specific websites relating to the topics covered by the laboratory exercise will be indicated.

Teaching methods

Laboratory activities guided by the teacher.

Presentation of a professional computer software aimed at teaching the evaluation of the nutritional status of a subject, of the total energy expenditure and the elaboration of specific dietary schemes also related to the prevention/treatment of various pathologies.

Assessment methods

The laboratory activity of Medicine and Surgery-Channel A students contributes to the achievement of the objectives of the Metabolic Biochemistry modules. The degree of learning of the students is then verified through the Metabolic Biochemistry oral exam.

Teaching tools

Dedicated computers and software are used.
