Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 5904)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student acquires methodological and applicative elements useful for integrating the knowledge gained in the teachings of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Course contents

Molecular techniques used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of DNA, used in the fields of clinical diagnostics, forensic medicine, and research.

PCR and Real-time PCR, Gel electrophoresis, Southern blotting, DNA fingerprinting.

Applications of the indicated techniques. Exercises: kinship test, identification of suspects in forensic genetics, clinical diagnoses (Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Huntington; sickle cell anemia, Sars-COV2 positivity…). Use of dedicated software to design primers to amplify genes by PCR.
