Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student knows the epistemological aspects of nursing discipline, the main models and theories of assistance, the disciplinary application tools and methods. The student knows the evolution of the professionalization process, the ethical, deontological and legislative aspects relevant to professional practice and the purpose and organization of the Italian National Health System.

Course contents

Concept of care and nursing, birth and evolution of the figure of the nurse.

Florence Nightingale: work, thought and influence on the process of professionalization of the nurse.

The concept of profession and distinctive features.

The process of professionalization of the nurse: the evolution of training, professional practice and the reference legislation.

The nurses' professional profile (D.M 739/1994): role and functions of the nurse.

Support staff: role, activity, training, nursing supervision.

The Order of Nursing Professions, purpose and structure.

Ethical deontological principles and nursing responsibilities.

The Code of Ethics.

Epistemological aspects of the nursing discipline, the metaparadigm of the nursing discipline.

Analysis and main contents of some theoretical models: V. Henderson, D. Orem, M. Gordon, L.J. Carpenito;

The method of nursing discipline, methodological approach in nursing care: the scientific method, problem solving, the nursing care process.

Diagnostic nursing taxonomies (with particular reference to NANDA-I).

Purpose and characteristics of nursing documentation, nursing record, integrated folder, guidelines, protocols, procedures.

The National Health Service: inspiring principles, aims and organizational structures, the Priority Health Problems.

Teaching methods

Frontal lesson, exercises, comparison and discussion, video.

Assessment methods

The learning test is divided into:

- a written test of n. 30 questions with multiple choice answer, the score of 24/30 or more allows the student to access the next oral test. The score of the written test has a weight equal to 70% of the final exam grade.

- an oral test consisting of two questions drawn by the student relating to the content of the course. The score of the oral exam (if sufficient) has a weight equal to 30% of the final exam grade.
