Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the students knows the epistemological aspects of the nursing discipline, the main models and theories of care, the tools and disciplinary application methods. They have to know the evolution of the professionalization process, the ethical deontological and legislative aspects relevant to the professional exercise and the purpose and organization of the National Health System.

Course contents

The concept of nursing care and assistance, the birth and evolution of the figure of the nurse (hints);


F. Nightingale: work, thoughts and influence on the process of nursing professionalization;


The nursing figure in Italy and internationally, the concept of profession, distinctive features;


The process of nursing professionalization: the evolution of training, professional practice and the reference legislation, role and functions of the nurse.


The Order of Nursing Professions, purpose and structure, ethical principles of ethics and nursing responsibilities, the Deontological Code;


Support staff: role, activity, training, nursing supervision;


The National Health Service: inspiring principles, aims and organizational structures, Priority Health Problems;


Epistemological aspects of nursing discipline, the metaparadigm of nursing discipline. Analysis and main contents of some theoretical models: V. Henderson, M. Gordon, L.J. Carpenito;


The method of nursing discipline, methodological approach in nursing care: the scientific method, problem solving, the nursing care process and its phases. Diagnostic nursing taxonomies;


Purpose and characteristics of nursing documentation, nursing record, integrated record, guidelines, protocols, procedures.

Teaching methods

Frontal lesson, exercises, comparison and discussion, cases, videos.

Assessment methods

The learning test is divided into a written test consisting of n. 30 questions with multiple choice answer; with a score equal to or greater than 24/30 you access the next oral test in which the student draws 2 questions related to the content treated.
