Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the evolution of European development and migration law and the link between them. The student will be able to develop a critical and proactive approach to the subject by learning different methods of analysis. At the end of the course, the student will be able to: a) understand the different elements and areas that characterise European development and migration policies from a legal point of view and their connection; b) carry out a critical analysis of what is dealt with, looking at both the normative and documentary part as well as the jurisprudential part; c) use research methods that allow an analysis characterised by a multidisciplinary approach to what is dealt with.

Course contents

The course, which will have a legal focus, aims at understanding the link between migration and development in European Union policies.
For this, it will firstly cover the analysis of the provisions of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union concerning these two policies and their relationship, as well as the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
Secondly, it will look at the relevant secondary legislation as well as the documents produced by the European political institutions, the case law of the Court of Justice and the decisions of the European Court of Auditors.
A third part will look at the international dimension, focusing on the most relevant acts and documents and their import into the European dimension.
Finally, with a horizontal approach, attention will be paid to the relationship between EU action in these two policies and the Sustainable Development Goals, on the one hand, and the 2030 Agenda, on the other.

Teaching methods

Il corso, oltre ad una parte teorica, prevede l'interazione tra studenti in classe; i documenti indicati dal docente saranno oggetto di analisi e discussione in classe.

I seminari organizzati nell'ambito del corso richiederanno la partecipazione critica degli studenti.

Assessment methods

The assessment is based on a written part and oral discussion. Both parts will account for 50% of the final grade.
