Learning outcomes

•At the end of the course the student acquires the fundamental notions for the preparation, the critical evaluation of the result of preparations for the cytohistopathological diagnostic investigation

Course contents

•Organization of the pathological anatomy laboratory, roles and integrations between the different professional figures.
Typologies and management of cyto/histological specimens in pathological anatomy.
Clinical risk management in anatomical pathology.
Computerization of pathological anatomy laboratories.
Histopathology techniques:
Fixation of cytological/histological specimens, fixation chemistry.
Chemical and biological risk: individual and collective protective equipment.
Preparation of samples in macroscopic and microscopic terms: the role of TSLB.
Sample processing and embedding.
Sectioning and preparation of sections on slides, histo-morphological stains.
Principles and diagnostic applications of histochemistry techniques, histochemical stains for the detection of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, amyloid, pigments, minerals, chemical reactions between tissue chemical groups and dyes.
Archiving of histological specimens and how to preserve them.
Hints of ancillary techniques in pathological anatomy and their application.
