Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student acquires the fundamental notions for the preparation and critical evaluation of the results of preparations for the cytohistopathological diagnostic investigation

Course contents

Introduction to the pathological anatomy laboratory: types of samples, workflow, traceability.

Methodological bases of histology and cytology: techniques, instruments, basic and special stains.

Extemporaneous intraoperative histological examination: special methods and applications (sentinel lymphonode in the freezer and by PCR).

In situ molecular pathology techniques: manual and automated immunohistochemistry; chromogenic and fluorescent in situ hybridization.

In vitro molecular pathology techniques: extraction and quantification of nucleic acids from archive tissues; PCR; real-time PCR; digital PCR; Sanger sequencing; NGS; molecular hybridization on a solid support.
