Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows how to treat the most frequent: - dermatological pathologies of inflammatory nature; - dermatological pathologies of infectious, traumatic and parasitic origin; - precancerous situations and malignant skin-mucosal neoplasms; - sexually transmitted diseases.

Course contents

Anatomy and physiology of the skin.

Recognize signs and elementary primary and secondary skin and mucous membrane lesions.

Perform the dermatological examination.

Identify the conditions in which it is useful or necessary to prescribe a dermatological consultation. Briefly describe the technical methods for performing a skin biopsy.

Infectious diseases of dermatological interest. Recognize or at least suspect and describe the clinical manifestations of the main skin and adnexal diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites (erysipelas, impetigo, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, warts, molluscum contagiosum, tinea capitis, tinea corporis, onychomycosis, candidiasis pityriasis versicolor, scabies, pediculosis).

Execute a microscopic preparation for the search of mites and fungi.

Dermatosis on a toxic-allergic basis. Recognizing the symptoms of urticaria-angioedema syndromes, interpreting their pathogenesis, researching their causes.

Recognize or at least suspect the skin signs of toxic or drug allergic infections and prescribe investigations and therapy.

Classify purpuras according to their pathogenesis.

Autoimmune diseases

Recognize the skin patterns of connective tissue disease (lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, morphea, scleroderma).

Recognize the clinical picture and indicate the most frequent causes of bullous autoimmune diseases (pemphigus, bullous pemphigoid, dermatitis herpetiformis).

Perform a microscopic preparation for cytological examination.

Inflammatory dermatoses.

Recognize the clinical manifestations of acne, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, alopecia.

Define lichen planus.

Describe in depth the clinical pictures, evolution, prognosis and therapy of psoriasis.

Allergic dermatoses.

Describe the most important features of: irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis. Provide indications for the prescription and describe the methods of carrying out, reading and interpreting the allergo-diagnostic skin tests.

Sexually transmitted diseases.

Describe the main clinical pictures of syphilis and gonorrhea, recognize patients to be sent to specialist treatment.

Classify the causes of urethritis, balanoposthitis and proctitis and recognize the picture, indicate the therapeutic norms to the patient.

Describe how to perform skin swabs.

Provide sexually transmitted disease counseling.

Skin tumors.

Classify, recognize or at least suspect the elementary lesions referable to benign and precancerous tumors.

Describe generalities, epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, natural history, morphological pictures and staging of nevi and melanoma.

Perform dermatoscopy.

Indicate the preferential surgical therapeutic approaches for the different types of skin tumors and describe the methods of surgical excision of lesions.

Burns: diagnostic framework and principles of therapy.

Know the classification of minor and major burns, hospitalization criteria, burn disease, first aid for the burn patient, medical and surgical treatment.

Organization and structure of a Burn Center and a Skin Bank.

Principles of wound dressing.

Regenerative medicine in dermatology.

Teaching methods

Theoretical lessons will be conducted in a classroom equipped with multimedia equipment, with the main use of slides in PowerPoint format. Students will be provided with the electronic version of the slides presented during the lessons.

Assessment methods

The exam session takes place orally and consists of one or more questions on the program for each of the three subjects (Infectious Diseases, Dermatology and Plastic Surgery). The number of questions may vary according to the level of preparation and in-depth study of the subject highlighted by the student in the answers.

The oral test is the only one that contributes to the determination of the final grade. This test is connected to evaluating the achievement of the training objectives, through the verification of the acquisition of a subset of the teaching objective competences.

The role of class attendance in the learning process is essential as the explanation and vision of clinical images can only partially be replaced by the study of textbooks alone.

The test does not include papers to be delivered before the exam date. The test involves a grade. To pass the exam, the student must obtain a pass mark (18/30) in each of the three subjects and the final grade is expressed out of thirty as the average resulting from the three individual tests.

The test mainly refers to the verification of knowledge (to know).

Tools such as calculation aids, dictionaries, codes are not allowed during the tests.

Registration for the exam takes place through AlmaEsami in specific opening periods shown on the teacher's web pages.
