93710 - Construction History

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Building Engineering -Architecture (cod. 5697)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will have acquired an in-depth knowledge on historical tecniques and building characters. The acquaintance with the practicality of the workshop will be also referred to the laws regulating the structural reasons and the constructive feasibility of the technical solutions, within the frame of the wider knowledge in the history of construction.

Course contents

The course includes the in-depth explanation of some macro-themes of the history of construction techniques; the aim is to provide an analytical vision of the materials and techniques that have allowed the creation of architectural works that are different in terms of formal and stylistic nature in different chronological and spatial contexts. In particular, the following topics relating to the history of construction will be explored: classical architecture (the Romans and their building techniques); medieval architecture (architecture of stone, brick and wood); modern architecture (from iron to reinforced concrete).

Starting from these theoretical assumptions, students will study some case studies, which will be the subject of exercises in view of the exam, also in accordance with the "Heritage Conservation" component of the integrated course.

Readings/Bibliography

At the end of the lessons, a specific bibliography will be provided.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons, seminars, exercises that will be partially carried out in the classroom and partially at home and will also include a presentation of the work done to the other students.

Assessment methods

Oral exam: in the first part of the exam, the result of the exercise on the case study will be exposed; in the second part of the exam, the student will be asked two questions related to the theoretical topics covered during the course.
