Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student, through the analysis of geological maps at different scales, is able to define the three-dimensional distribution of geological units present in a given area, and to understand the physical processes and geological forms generated by them. The student is familiar with the methodologies of geological survey and cartographic representation of the surface and subsurface of alluvial plains and coastal plains. The student is able to use the information on a geologic map for applications related to natural resource management and related issues.
Course contents
Module 1 (P. Severi)
Recalls of the stratigraphy and structural setting of the northern Apennines. Understanding of three-dimensional geometry of geologic units through analysis of cartography and geologic sections.
Survey methodology and cartographic representation of alluvial plains. Use of images and databases for mapping outcrops and buried areas of the alluvial plains.
Analysis of isobath and isopach maps of sedimentary bodies and aquifers.
Use of geological mapping as background information for applications on water reserves and environmental studies.
Module 2 (L. Gemignani)
Classroom exercises in reading and interpreting geological cartography at different scales, including through the use of GIS Geographic Information Systems.
Geological survey in the northern Apennines along significant transects; understanding of tectonic deformation structures and outcropping stratigraphic successions.
Readings/Bibliography
Geological maps of the CARG project
Rilevamento Geologico, realizzazione e interpretazione delle carte geologiche. Giorgio Cremonini. Pitagora editrice, Bologna
Teaching methods
Lectures, classroom exercises on maps and geological sections and field survey
Assessment methods
Integrated examination of the two modules. The exam consists of an oral interview aimed at ascertaining the knowledge acquired on the theoretical aspects of the course, supplemented by the presentation of personal geological documents.
Teaching tools
PPT files of the slides shown in the lectures and exercises will be provided, as well as geological maps and related illustrative notes.
