Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired the fundamental notions for the critical evaluation and the interpretation of the results of the main diagnostic laboratory investigations.

Course contents

1) pathological anatomy techniques, macroscopic examination, histological examination, cytological examination, cryostat extemporaneous examination, postmortem autopsy examination (preparation of the slides, usefulness and significance of the different types of examination)
2) outline of molecular biology techniques applied in pathological anatomy
3) inflammation and tissue repair: acute and chronic inflammation, inflammation mediators, wound healing, granulation tissue.
4) concepts of hyperplasia, hypertrophy, cellular atypia, dysplasia, neoplasia.
5) concept and meaning of in situ carcinoma and invasive carcinoma
6) neoplasms and genetics

7) spread of cancer: metastases and spread for contiguity and related clinical problems
8) general concept of paraneoplastic syndrome
9 )grading and staging of neoplasms (TNM)
10) pathology of the oral cavity: a) malformation (micrognathia; labiopalatoschisis; macroglossia) b) nonneoplastic pathology (ulcerated lesions of the oral cavity; leucoplachia; candidiasis; herpetic lesions) c) oral pathology under AIDS: verrucosa leuoplachia and kaposi sarcoma.
11) Dental cysts and tumors (keratocytic dental cancer, ameloblastoma)
12) squamous oral carcinoma
13) pre-cancerous injuries and conditions (lichen planus)
14) Rare oral cancers: lymphoma, melanoma and rhabdomyosarcoma
15) pathology of the salivary glands: outline of anatomy and histology of the major and minor salivary glands; mumps; s.di Sjogren; tumors (pleomorphic adenoma, t.di Warthin, adenoidocistic carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma)

16) pathology of the pharynx and upper respiratory tract (nasal polyps, Wegener disease, olfactory neuroblastoma, adenocarcinoma of intestinal type, undifferentiated carcinoma of the rhinopharynx, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis)
17) pathology of the larynx (congenital malformations; polyps and laryngeal nodules, laryngitis; squamous carcinoma)
18) pulmonary pathology (program to be agreed with the professor of pneumology)
19) neck cysts (thyoglossus duct cysts)
20) Ear disease: osteoma and cholesteatoma
