Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student possesses basic notions regarding acoustic and sound physics as well as the correlates relating to sound production, and is also able to understand the biomechanical events that underlie verbal communication in terms of the production of linguistic traits.

Course contents

During the lessons the basic notions and principles of articulatory and acoustic phonetics will be provided. The following topics will be mainly covered:

1. anatomy and physiology of the articulators;

2. functional components of the mechanism of production of linguistic sounds: generation, phonation and articulation;

3. description and classification of consonants and vowels, with particular reference to the Italian repertoire;

4. prosody: duration, accent, tone and intonation;

5. basic elements of acoustic phonetics. Source / filter theory of speech production.

6 . tools for evaluating the verbal signal: oscillograms and spectrograms of consonants and vowels;

7. coarticulation: coordination and superimposition of articulatory gestures.

Teaching methods

Frontal lectures with iconographic material relating to the shape and functioning of the articulators.

For optional further information, further readings and some links to sites containing relevant material in the field of articulatory and acoustic phonetics will be indicated.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written test lasting 30 minutes with 3 questions of different complexity and different scores:

- question 1: relating to 50% of the final grade

- question 2: relating to 30% of the final grade

- question 3: relating to 20% of the final grade

During the first lesson, all information on the organization of the course and the exam will be provided.
