Course contents

This course explores the interrelationship between language and culture from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. Three basic concepts will be analyzed primarily: 1) how language expresses cultural reality (of the individual and the community); 2) how language incorporates cultural reality; and 3) how language is also a symbol of cultural reality.

These three important aspects of language will be addressed with the help of critical methodologies drawing on ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics and cultural linguistics.

In addition to a theoretical part, the course will offer students the opportunity to engage with the analysis of texts and audiovisual products (documentaries, TV reports, TV series)
