Learning outcomes

This Lab is intended to develop competences in observation and analysis of social interaction occurring within educational and care contexts.

It serves several purposes. Primarily, it provides students with an opportunity to learn and apply basic ethnographic methods in a guided setting. Further, it encourages students to adopt a professional vision nurtured by language and social interaction studies and ethnographic methods when dealing with interactions in educational and healthcare contexts.

Objectives

In this course, students will: learn how to do basic ethnographic research, including observations and video analysis; exercise their academic skills in oral presentations

Course contents

The Lab Ethnography and video-analysis in educational and healthcare contexts provides students with a methodological introduction to ethnography and video-analysis of social interaction. The Lab will primarily focus on collective analyses and discussions of videorecordings and transcripts of real-life conversations between care professionals and patients. In particular, two healthcare contexts will be investigated: 1) primary care visits of unaccompanied foreign minors (UFMs) and 2) pediatric visits.

Students will be asked to realize group works and other activities in order to critically reflect on the daily professional challenges faced by care practitioners. Particular attention will be devoted to the following issues: the role and dilemmas of educators during UFMs' healthcare encounters; communication and interprofessionality in UFMs' medical visits; UFMs' agency attribution and denial; the educational work of pediatricians; the interactive construction of "good" parenting; the interactive construction of "normality".
