Learning outcomes

M-PSI/03: By the end of the laboratory course, the student: will be able to manage a dataset; will be familiar with data analyses and their use.

M-PSI/08: By the end of the course the student will be able to discriminate between different psychotherapeutic techniques referring to the CBT approach; be able to understand the proper application of the single technique according to individuals' needs and symptoms.

Course contents

M-PSI/03 (Psychometrics Module, Prof. Giulia Casu)

Variable recoding and computation; Descriptive and multivariate inferential statistics: formulation of research hypotheses and evaluation of the type of variables available for data analysis, choice of the appropriate statistical test, statistical analysis with SPSS, interpretation of the results, writing a report of the results.

Main statistical models covered in the course: General Linear Model: ANOVA (one-way, two-way) and Linear regression analysis (simple, multiple).

The Psychometrics module will take place in the first semester (September-January).

Conceptual bases and practical applications of supportive therapy, psycho-education and psychological rehabilitation.

Explanation of the differences between the different types of psychological interventions and basic information about psychotherapy models.

The Clinical Psychology module will take place during the first semester (September 2023 - January 2024, with calendar to be defined)

Teaching methods

M-PSI/03 (Psychometrics Module, Prof. Giulia Casu)

The lessons will be organized in practical exercises in the computer lab with the SPSS statistical package; the exercises will be individual or in small groups.

M-PSI/08 (Clinical Psychology Module, Prof. Paola Surcinelli)

Theoretical contents will be supported and integrated with group works, presentation and discussion of clinical cases, videos, and role-playings.

Assessment methods

Attendance at all classes is mandatory and it will be registered by personal signature. Admission to the final exam will be restricted to those who have attended all the classes.

The skills acquired will be verified through a practical exercise which will take place in the computer lab, using the SPSS statistical package and data provided by the teacher.

For the practical application of the topics covered in the course, the teacher will provide teaching materials. Lessons will take place in the computer lab, students will have access to the computers in the computer lab where the SPSS statistical package is installed; the teacher will use the video projector and the PC to illustrate the statistical analyses.
