Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Moduli: Francesco Toselli (Modulo 1) Massimo Brignoni (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Industrial Design (cod. 8182)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student is able to use the basic analytical, critical and expressive tools for the management and interpretation of the industrial product design according to the guiding themes of the art of configuring in relation to technology. Through exercises on the founding elements of industrial design the student knows: • the dual aspects of building technology • the foundations of the art of configuring (notion of system, notion of sign as a unity of structure and image, notion of differences); • the basic elements of structural grammar and generative and transformational grammar; • the role of the user through notions of visual and haptic perception.

Course contents

The course aims to develop in the student a design method that can be applied to different project scales. Students will be required to develop the entire design process, from a first phase of observation and research, to the formulation of the concept, up to the realization of the project through study models, technical drawing and final models on 1:1 scale.

The course will investigate the most common production processes by reworking them in order to produce artifacts made of caramel, a material that has many features in common with plastics due to its ductility and workability.

WORKSHOP

The workshop intends to offer students an integrative, intense and time-focused design experience to work alongside the institutional planning laboratory of the Degree Course. The activities will take place in the classroom and attendance is mandatory for all scheduled days.

Teaching methods

The course opens with some theoretical lessons that illustrate the methodology needed to tackle the project.
Following the framing of the theme, the work takes place by investigating all the project phases with constant revisions and virtual insights into the design developments.

Assessment methods

The exam takes into consideration the following materials to be graded:

Project books
Technical tables
1:1 scale prototype
Folder with photo and video material

In addition to the quality of the aforementioned documents, part of the evaluation takes into account proactive participation in the course and compliance with the deadlines.
