20756 - Imaging Diagnostics and Radiotherapy

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Dietistic (cod. 8470)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student acquired knowledge on ionizing radiations from a physical point of view and in particular: what they are, where they originate from, how they interact with the subject

Course contents

Background on radiation - Electromagnetic waves - Ionizing radiation - Interactions with matter - Attenuation - Dosimetry - External and internal irradiation - Distribution of ionizations - Radiobiology (biological effects, radiosensitivity, stochastic and non-stochastic damage) - Radiation protection (legislative sources, principles, exposure limits, work areas, classification of workers, pregnancy)

Readings/Bibliography

The teaching material relating to the injuries carried out is available, updated, on the 'Virtuale - virtual learning environment' - University of Bologna platform, with limited access to university students.
To complete the program, the Ionizing Radiation Protection Manual - Policlinico S.Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, Health Physics Service - August 2011, version 3 is available on the same website.

Assessment methods

The verification takes place through a final written exam aimed at ascertaining the knowledge and skills acquired. The test includes a series of multiple choice questions, not less than 15, diversified for each topic of the program and periodically updated.

The score is +2 for each correct answer and 0 for wrong or absent answer.

The maximum score obtainable by providing all correct and complete answers is therefore equal to 30 cum laude. The test is passed with a minimum score of 18/30.

The time available to the student is 30 minutes and during the test the use of support material (books, notes, computer supports) is not allowed.

The grade reported in the single teaching module is mediated (weighted average by number of credits) with the partial grades obtained in the other modules of the integrated course.

The outcome of the on-going test of the single module will be valid only for the academic year of the test itself.
