67037 - Physical Chemistry with Laboratory

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Moduli: Elisabetta Venuti (Modulo 1) Riccardo Tarroni (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Rimini
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Technologies for the Environment and Materials (cod. 8514)

Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to familiarize the student with laboratory experiments that will illustrate the concepts discussed in the lectures of Physical Chemistry 67035 and with some of the tools and apparatuses used by physical chemists. Students will learn 1)to apply concepts of thermodynamics, kinetics and quantum chemistry in six experiment 2) to work in experiments on their own or in a small group 3) to communicate the results of their work in a written form, learning to write scientific reports in a clear, complete, coincise way.

Course contents

The course consists of class lectures in which the experiments performed in the laboratories are introduced and explained in details, followed by laboratory sessions on the following subjects:

1) Determination of the Ka of weak acids and effects of the ionic strength on the Ka

2) Kinetics of the ethyl acetate hydrolysis, by conductimetric methods

3) Determination of pKa of an acid-base indicator by spectrophotometry

4) Partial miscibility in a ternary system (water,a cetic acid , CCl4)

5) Differential Solution Heat of KNO3

6) Computational chemistry.

Teaching methods

Class lectures and Laboratory

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires the performance of all students of modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode and participation in module 3 of specific training on safety and health in places of study. Information on dates and methods of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the specific section of the degree program website.

Assessment methods

The evaluation of the course 67037-Physical Chemistry Laboratory takes place together with the evaluation of the course 67035-Physical Chemistry, according to the modalities described in detail in the sheet of course 67035
