Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide students with the analytical tools to examine the role of the State in market economies. At the end of the course, the student is able to understand the motivations of public intervention in market economies; analyze the main programs of public expenditures; and understand the main features of tax design.

Course contents

The course is organized in three parts. The first part is devoted to the analysis of externalities and to a discussion of the problems underlying the provision of public goods. The second part describes the mechanisms of functioning of the insurance market and the redistributive role of government. Finally, the last part analyzes the theoretical and institutional aspects related to the main direct and indirect taxes of the Italian tax system. Detailed information on the program will be available at http://iol.unibo.it.
