Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student acquires the knowledge and ability to understand the major pathological conditions of neonatal and pediatric age.

Course contents

General introduction to Neonatology. Transition from fetal to neonatal life and perinatal physiology. Care of the healthy newborn.

Neonatal classification according to gestational age.

Care in the Delivery Room: hints of Neonatal Resuscitation. Birth trauma.

Perinatal Asphyxia.

Screening and Health assessment. Vaccination schedule.

Feeding in the first year of life. Weaning.

Physiological jaundice of the newborn, pathological jaundice.

Clinical manifestation, etiology, risk factors, natural hystory, diagnosis and management of neonatal infections. 

Neonatal lung disease.

Celiac disease; Cystic fibrosis.

Visit to Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Obstetric Clinic (observation and objective examination on healthy and pathological newborn).
