Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the student has the essential knowledge - in order to historically frame the profession of Dental Hygienist - obtained with the study of the evolution, throughout the centuries, of the medical thought, especially the odontostomatological one.

Course contents

This course provides this topics:

  • diseases history and of their historical knowledge and evolution (medicine and surgery in the antiquity, roman medicine, medieval and early medieval period, renaissance, etc.) with particular reference to the epidemic pathologies, from pestilence to recent COVID-19.
  • human body history and human body study history with particular reference to odondo-stomatology evolution.
  • history and social definition of the profession and role of the doctor and surgeon and dental medicine; will be discussed different criteria of inclusion and exclusion from medical profession (gender, social class, education) and historical changes of the doctor-patient relation and history of the informed consensus.
  • dental medicine history
  • dental medicine history as method of knowledge of the empiric medicine, until biomedicine and telemedicine. In this module will be analyzed relations between medicine, religion and other fields.

Assessment methods

The exam will be oral and it will be on one or more topics covered during the lessons, the level of learning will be verified at the end of the course and will test the student's knowledge of the topics in the program.
