Learning outcomes

Alla fine del corso lo studente conosce i metodi e concetti principali della statistica applicata alla ricerca nell'ambito delle scienze bio-mediche sperimentali. Lo studente è in grado inoltre di: - descrivere, interpretare e comunicare in modo appropriato le informazioni raccolte su un collettivo di unità sperimentali o pazienti, - valutare le proprietà teoriche delle misurazioni effettuate in ambito biomedico e le loro caratteristiche in termini di sensibilità e specificità, - utilizzare i principali modelli probabilistici per a) predire il comportamento di una variabile biologica nella popolazione o in gruppi di pazienti , b) prendere razionalmente decisioni tra più ipotesi diagnostiche o terapeutiche in presenza di incertezza.

Statistical surveys and data preparation.

Frequency distributions and data visualizations.

Means and measures of statistical dispersion.

Shapes of a distribution.

Relationship between two variables: contingency tables and correlation measures.

Statistical tests for comparing means, frequencies and distributions.

Measures of diagnostic accuracy.

Main epidemiological study designs.

Teaching methods

Taught classes, computer lab classes, and self-assessment quizzes.

Assessment methods

Twenty-five-minute quiz consisting of 16 questions with 4 possible answers.

The test is passed if the student answers at least 8 questions correctly. There are no penalties for wrong answers. Students who fail the exam are permitted to retake it on any of the subsequent exam dates.

Calculators and formularies are unnecessary. Non-native Italian speakers are allowed to use a dictionary.

Students can schedule a meeting by email to review and discuss their past exam with the professor.

The slides and scientific articles presented in class will be made available to the students on the university's online platform.
