Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in School of Dentistry (cod. 8204)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the internship the student has successfully attended the Orthodontic service and therefore possesses a preparation that allows to recognize, face and solve simple cases related to orthodontic problems.

Course contents

The internship consists of a theoretical part which describes the main types of fixed and removable equipment used in orthodontics.

Specifically, as regards to fixed devices, the concept of orthodontic brackets will be introduced, their characteristics will be explained in detail and how to perform their positioning will be described; while, as regards the removable devices, the characteristics of the main types of activators will be outlined and finally the various types of orthodontic restraints will be mentioned.

During the foreseen practical exercises the student will be able to practice bending the orthodontic wires in order to learn how to model different arch shapes and reproduce the folds of I, II, and III order. Some braces will be positioned on dental cast. The student will be asked to model a retainer (fixed restraint device) and will see how a Hawley plate (removable restraint device) is made.
