Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student possesses knowledge of basic epidemiology, epidemiological methodology and the principles and methods of prevention. In particular, the student is able to: - use the tools for a correct epidemiological approach to health / disease problems in the population; - promote and evaluate primary, secondary and tertiary prevention measures, in particular of multifactorial diseases, inherent to the motor field and correct lifestyles; - assess the safety conditions of sports facilities and their compliance with hygiene requirements.

Course contents

History and definition of Epidemiology.

Reference to the general principles of prevention: primary, secondary, tertiary prevention. The role of epidemiology.

The determinants of health with particular reference to correct lifestyles.

Causality and Causal Inference in Epidemiology.

Sources and methods of collecting data of health interest.

Measures of occurrence: incidence and prevalence.

Association measures: relative risk and odds ratio.

The main epidemiological study designs: experimental studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, ecological studies.

Confounding and bias factors in epidemiological studies.

Scientific evidence. Systematic reviews and meta-analyzes: basic principles for interpretation and conduct. General principles of hygiene and safety in sports facilities.

Assessment methods

The exam of the integrated course of "Epidemiology and Pharmacology" consists of an oral exam for both courses. The tests can be taken in the same session, or in two sessions of the same period (January-February; June-July; September).
