Course content

English language and culture. A brief revision of English grammar from B1 upwards (or slightly above). Students will be divided into proficiency groups based on the obligatory test taken after Christmas. The text used in class will depend on the level of each group.

NB. Students attending this workshop in order to take the second year exam must read this [https://www.gazzaro.it/b/for_sfp2_students_attending_sfp1_workshops.htm] .

Bibliography

It will be notified after the groups are formed.

Teaching methodology

The methods and techniques used include: reading and comprehension exercises in small groups, form-focussed grammar revision individually and in small groups, listening practice with small group exercises, flipped classroom student presentations of lexical, grammatical and video material, production of short texts, poems, scripts based on the language presented in the book, Grammar-Drama activities (acting out original scripts exemplifying grammar and pronunciation issues), songs, role-play, videos, collaborative and individual writing on paper and on Moodle/Virtuale.

Assessment methods

Continuous assessment during the workshop will be followed by a final formative test to give students an idea of their individual level and possible problems to work on. This test will count as final exam, and all the students who pass it and who have satisfactory «active presence» will be IDONEI they will carry on with the second year workshop in the following academic year. At the end of the second year workshop there will be a comprehensive language exam.

In case of a fail, exams can be taken in consecutive regular appelli.

This regular exam will consist of a B1 language test which includes: Lexical exercises (naming objects, describing simple pictures, filling in the gaps in a text, finding the right words to describe a room, school, house, natural landscape, outdoor scene, etc., all at B1 level); Grammar exercises (sentence completion, grammatical choice, verb tenses, irregular verbs, pronouns, comparatives and superlatives, conditionals, etc., all at B1 level with a few B1+ questions); a Reading exercise (a short text with T/F/Not said questions, word definitions, simple synonym identification, title or sentence insertion, etc.); a Writing on familiar topics (describing people, common situations, simple school activities, etc., at least 100 words). The exam lasts 60 minutes.

For a facsimile of the exam, see here [https://www.gazzaro.it/b/SFP.htm#sfp1] .

There is no session skipping or salto di appello.
Marks will be sent via the University email to each student, and details will be quoted for each part of the test. Students do not have to accept the ID result, registering (verbalizzazione) will be done by default.

In order to take the exam it is absolutely necessary for a student to have enrolled on Almaesami. It is not possible to take any exam without formal enrolment there. In case of problems with the enrolment process students MUST CONTACT THE UFFICIO DIDATTICO BEFORE THE ENROLMENT DEADLINE. Once the enrolment lists are closed, no student can be added.

Teaching tools

Apart from the book, students will work with presentations, audio clips, photos, videos from the book CDs and online, Padlet or similar, own cellphones to contribute materials on shared platforms like Moodle, or to ask questions online, OHP, besides traditional paper-based tools.

Course content

English language and culture. A brief revision of English grammar from B1.1 to B2-. Students will still be divided into proficiency groups based on the first year exam result. The text used in class will depend on the level of each group. In general it is the same as the first year.

Bibliography

See above: the same as the first year.

Teaching methodology

The methods and techniques used include: reading and comprehension exercises in small groups, form-focussed grammar revision individually and in small groups, listening practice with small group exercises, flipped classroom student presentations of lexical and grammatical material, production of short texts, poems, scripts based on the language presented in the book, Grammar-Drama activities (acting out original scripts exemplifying grammar and pronunciation issues), songs, role-play, videos, collaborative and individual writing on paper and on digital platforms like Moodle, Padlet, Edmodo, etc.

Assessment methods

The final test will take place at the end of the workshop in written form: it will be a B2- grammar test based on the materials in the books used with a composition on everyday topics. Continuous assessment during the workshop may be also adopted by some teachers.

For a facsimile of the exam, see here [https://www.gazzaro.it/b/SFP.htm#sfp2] . This facsimile of the final exam is mainly to exemplify all the different typologies of exercises you can find in the final exam. There are several sections: on Grammar, Lexicon, Idioms, a Reading comprehension, a Listening (with a transcription of the audio and 10 gaps to fill) and a Writing (at least 150 words). Ideas of possible Writing topics will be offered during the lessons. The marking system assigns points to each correct item, and zero for empty or wrong answers. The final result registered on AlmaEsami is not in marks but a straight IDONEO/NON IDONEO. Check also this video explanation of the exam format [https://www.gazzaro.it/b/media/Sfp2-Scritto-2022.mp4] .

English language workshops - SFP ciclo unicoThird yearCourse content

Even in the third year, students will be offered personalised courses, based on their language level. Some students will carry on working on their language, towards approximating a B1+/B2 level as much as possible. Others will have a mixed course, partly linguistic and partly methodological. Others still, will have a purely methodological course.

The purely methodological course will deal with: English phonetics and prosody; English pronunciation teaching methodology. These workshops will concentrate on activities aimed at improving everybody's pronunciation, with the aim of learning to teach in English with acceptable pronunciation. Materials on the teaching of pronunciation will also be commented.

Students will be notified before the start of the workshops about which course/group they must attend, according to their individual language level.

Bibliography

For the linguistic and mixed levels, the texts used in the previous years will be used. For the methodological groups, no text is needed, materials will be available on Moodle during and after the course.

Teaching methodology

For Group A, B, E, F: Students will test and demonstrate to the whole class various techniques for teaching English to the class itself, and also at the primary and infant school. In particular, they will work on improving their own pronunciation in order to speak and work in English. For Groups C & G: Mixed language and teaching methodology activities, with listening work on non-standard accents of English. For Groups D & H: Language practice interactive activities based on pronunciation and grammar.

Assessment methods

Continuous assessment during the workshop will be used to give personalised advice. Several in-class tests will be administered on active pronunciation, fluency, intonation, comprehension, also with non-standard English accents. They will not count as part of the final exam, but they will be formative, and they will give students an idea of what to do to perform better orally, especially with children.

The final exam will be oral, and it will be adapted to each student's level; there will be three possible kinds of oral: purely linguistic, mixed or purely methodological, according to the group attended. The final oral will take place in the usual exam sessions:

1. Students from groups A, B, E, F (Methodological groups) will discuss theories, problems and activities shown during the workshop, to prove they are able to handle the teaching of pronunciation at infant and primary school, referring to the Powerpoints presented in class and shared on VIRTUALE. They can bring to the oral discussions or demonstrations of their own materials or ideas to teach English pronunciation. They will present us with a lesson for the Primary school, to prove they can teach simple pronunciation/grammar topics. Students should choose a sound, or group of sounds, or structure, or lexical items they would like to teach children; then they should create an activity with the necessary materials (cards, pictures, drawings, puppets, charts, mimes, theatrical contraptions, monsters, real-life objects, etc.); they should specify the teaching objectives, the prerequisites, the class level they want to teach. The oral is a demonstration/description of their activity/ies. Students must be be creative, imaginative, deviate from the norms, and add their own ideas and feelings about teaching with the materials they are showing us. They can be critical, if they wish, and underline the limitations of any theories / activities encountered during the workshop.

2. Students from groups C & G (Methodology + language groups) will be asked to present a lesson for the Primary school, to prove they can teach simple pronunciation/grammar topics.

3. Students from groups D & H (Language reinforcement groups) will be asked to describe a picture or a drawing chosen at random, to prove they can improvise a simple, short discussion/description in English, based on the topics discussed during the workshops in the second semester.

The orals will last normally between 5 and 10 minutes.

Teaching tools

Slides, OHP, audio files, videos, flashcards, various theatre props the students may feel necessary to create.
