Learning outcomes
Understanding of healthcare differences in developing countries. Understanding how to develop professional expertise through volunteering experiences in developing countries. Learn about experiences of medical doctors and healthcare professional who volunteered in developing countries.
Course contents
The activity of Interethnos Interplast Italia Foundation, which has been involved in reconstructive plastic surgery for over thirty years in developing countries, will be presented.
The purpose of missions is to establish a didactic relationship in agreement with local doctors.
Teaching in host countries concerns:
-Frontal lessons
- Organization of workshops dedicated to specific topics requested by the host hospital
-Scientific cultural exchanges between students and medical specialists at Universities.
During elective clinical cases will be presented regarding the treatment of reconstructive plastic surgery in patients with severe malformations of the face, hand and lower limbs, burns, trauma of the face and the limbs, rare specific pathologies of the country.
The aspects of patient safety in the operating room and in the postoperative period will also be analyzed.
Exchanges will be explored with the Universities present abroad: in Asia Africa, Latin America.
Methods of behavior of the specialist group will be presented with regard to the habits and customs of the host country.
The activity of specialist doctors in plastic reconstructive surgery, anesthesiology and graduate in nursing science is free.

Teaching methods
Attendance to this learning activity is mandatory; the minimum attendance requirement to be admitted to the final exam is 66% of lessons. For Integrated Courses (IC), the 66% attendance requirement refers to the total amount of I.C. lessons. Students who fail to meet the minimum attendance requirement will not be admitted to the final exam of the course, and will have to attend relevant classes again during the next academic year.
Professors may authorise excused absences upon receipt of proper justifying documentation, in case of illness or serious reasons. Excused absences do not count against a student’s attendance record to determine their minimum attendance requirement.
