Course contents

Mirrors of politics.

The biography as a historical and historiographic genre.

The course intends to address the topic of historical biography as a historiographical genre. Since the eighties and nineties of the last century, a series of debates, especially in the French and German areas have revealed, in their most recent developments, a deepening of the possible use of the biographical module by the socalled "new political history".

The latest research shows how the personal approach (not excluding autobiography and the bulk of ego-documents) and the category of individual prove to be particularly functional to describe the historical reality, especially of the countries that are going through a transition phase.

These results open new and interesting glimpses also regarding the repercussions in the debate on history and biography.

The course will initially include a broad reflection on historical biography, a genre that in recent years has been a great success; we will compare ourselves with the range of concepts and authors from different horizons and genres; the biography will be analyzed as a hybrid genre, in tension between history and fiction; the rapprochement between history and biography; the fusion of rhetoric, narration and eloquence; the dualism biography and autobiography.

In the sign of continuity with the previous module (History of Europe in the modern age), it will be better understood how the biographical genre is particularly effective in reconstructing the political activity of the protagonists and how much their personal experiences have influenced diplomatic relations since the modern age.
