Course contents

The course (40 hours) on translation into French aims to provide the linguistic, lexical and cultural tools to enable the student to translate authentic texts of various types (press, literary text, specialised document, etc.).

The course will therefore be based on an in-depth study of linguistic knowledge (syntax, grammar and vocabulary) in French as well as understanding of the original text in Italian. Language skills will be consolidated through pedagogical translation and discourse analysis exercises. In addition, authentic documents relating to French-speaking culture and societies will be studied in order to enable the student to acquire the cultural skills necessary for translation practice. Finally, a reflection on translation strategies and the various problems related to them will be developed.

Lesson structure

Each student will be asked to do an individual translation of the texts, following (with a few variations) this scheme:

- collective discovery of the text: contextualisation, collective reading, identification of potential translation difficulties;

- documentary and terminological investigation: through research by the student and reading of French texts;

- in-depth study of grammatical and morphosyntactic notions

- individual translation of the text into French

- rereading and individual and collective corrections;

The texts to be translated will be provided by the teacher and shared on Moodle during the semester.

Students will be asked to do their own continuous reading in French, in order to improve their expressive ability in the foreign language and to deepen their cultural knowledge.

Teaching methods

The course is based on the active participation of the student.

It will be necessary to upload the translation made on the Moodle platform to ensure a collective correction that takes into account all the difficulties and reflections. In addition, the teacher will also make personal corrections to the translations, which will not be subject to an assessment.

Attendance of at least 70% of the lessons is compulsory in order to sit the exam.

Assessment methods



In order to verify the consolidation of linguistic knowledge in French and the student's ability to translate simple texts from Italian into French, at the end of the course, the student must pass an examination consisting of a written translation of an Italian text into French of approximately 250/300 words.

The mark obtained in this test will be added to the one obtained in the passive translation test and then the average of the two results will be taken.

For the translation, students will be able to use monolingual Italian and French dictionaries and a glossary drawn up in class, as well as the main IT tools (the test will take place in a classroom equipped with computers).

Teaching tools

In addition to the Moodle platform, students will make use of monolingual dictionaries, both paper and non-paper, encyclopaedias, the Internet and the press.

At the beginning of the semester, one lesson will be devoted to the use of online tools specific to French writing.
