Learning outcomes
At the end of the module the student has the knowledge and the ability to understand the aims of research in the field of obstetric profession in order to improve care procedures. He knows the methodological principles of finding evidence in the scientific literature of obstetric interest. He is able to apply the procedures to carry out a research process.
Course contents
- Definition of scientific research.
- The research methodology: objectives, questions, hypotheses and research variables.
- The main research designs and their characteristics (group work is planned)
- aetiological studies, in particular the case-control study and the cohort study.
- treatment studies, in particular RCTs.
- diagnostic studies or sensitivity and specificity.
- Critical evaluation of studies (group work is planned)
- Bibliographic research (laboratory)
- The construction of the question
- The main biomedical databases
- Methods of bibliographical research with particular reference to obstetric, gynecological and neonatal aspects, also in relation to the feeding of the infant's newborn.
- The realization of the research protocol (group / individual works are foreseen)
Group / individual work will be evaluated as ongoing tests

Teaching methods
The course is divided into:
- Frontal lessons
- Practical exercises in computer science classroom
- Group / individual work
Course attendance is compulsory (absences not exceeding 25% of the total course hours are allowed); practical activities and group or individual work will be considered as ongoing tests and will define the final evaluation
Assessment methods
The final assessment is based on the weighted sum of the evaluations obtained in the group / individual works and in the exercises, as well as on a final written test, relative to the principles of the methodology of research in the obstetric field and to the declination in practice of its results. The value scale that determines the grade of each test in progress is at four points:
- insufficient is, on a scale of thirty out of 18
- sufficient is, on a scale of thirty, including between 18 and 21
- good is, on a scale of thirty, including between 24 and 27
- excellent is, on a scale of thirty, including between 28 and 30
