Learning outcomes

The main learning outcomes of the course should be:

  • understanding and use of terminology releveant to specific professional interpretation contexts;
  • ability to present information and data fluently using the terminology acquired;
  • ability to assimilate and reproduce information acquired through written and spoken inputs.

Course contents

The course presents and seeks to develop the use of accurate and fluent English in specific contexts of professional interpretation, such as:

  • Business
  • Economics and Finance
  • Political and Social

In particular, the course content will include:

  • Description of data presented in graphs and charts
  • Perfection of business, economic and financial terminology
  • Comparative analysis of political terminology
NB: A 70 % attendance rate is required.

Materials published on the Moodle elearning platform.

Teaching methods

Classroom activities will first be used to present materials and to collect and analyse terminology. Subsequently, students will exploit this lexis to prepare individual presentations of business organisations and political institutions.

Assessment methods

The final written examination (2 hours) will consist of:

  • Written description of the information and trends shown in a graph and/or table;
  • Reading comprehension of a business text;
  • Vocabulary exercises relating to subject areas covered in the course;
  • Summary of an oral presentation regarding a general language theme;
  • Written comparison between two national political systems.

The oral examination will be based on:

  • Oral description of the information and trends shown in a graph and/or table;
  • Presentation and comparison of two competitor organisations;
  • Discussion of a general topic (language, current affairs, etc.) based on a written prompt (a newspaper headline or a short synopsis of a web article).
