Classification of numbers: the sets N, Q, and R, their essential features, and their cardinality. Numerically equivalent sets. Countably (denumerably) and uncountably infinite sets.
Discrete mathematics: permutations, dispositions, and combinations (with and without repetition).
Basic probability: binomial probability formula for Bernoulli trials.
Equations and inequalities of different kinds: irrational, with absolute value, exponential, and logarithmic.
Continuous mathematics: domains, ranges, and graphs of elementary functions.
Bounded and unbounded functions, even and odd functions, asymptotes.
Geometric transformations on functions: symmetries and translations.
Geometrical approach to reciprocal functions and simple composite functions.
Graphical solving of inequalities.
Mathematical analysis: some remarkable limits and indeterminate forms.
Continuity and derivability: derivatives of elementary functions and applications.
Plan of function investigation, convexity and inflexion points included.
Sets of primitives for elementary functions.
Definite integrals: Newton-Leibniz formula for continuous functions.
Some improper integrals.
The sum of infinite series: geometric series.
Assessment methods
The exam lasts 2 hours, and consists of a hierarchical series of exercises. The first part is the simplest one: it allows students to reach the minimum mark (18/30). The other exercises allow students to obtain higher marks (until 30/30 with honour).
