Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students:
- have the necessary knowledge and skills to plan and carry out a social research;
- know the criteria to solve the methodological and technical problems they can meet during the research;
- know the various research techniques either the statistical quantitative or the qualitative ones
Course contents
The course is divided in two parts.
The first part examines selected methodological problems of quantitative research. The topics are the following:
- Method and techniques in social sciences
- Data collection techniques; data analysis techniques
- Univariate analysis
- Bivariate analysis
The second part is focused on conducting and analysing qualitative interviews in the social sciences. We will examine four stages:
- Defining the aim and scope of the research.
- Devising a questionnaire.
- Carrying out the interviews.
- Analysing the data.

Assessment methods
The final assesment will be made according to:
- first part assessment (50%)
- second part assessment (50%)
First part: written exam.
Second part: at the end of the course, each student must prepare an original questionnaire and test it in two face-to-face interviews, each lasting at least twenty minutes. Interviews must be recorded and entirely transcribed. The final paper should be divided into three parts:
- The text of the questionnaire.
- The transcription of both interviews, with questions and answers.
- A self-evaluation of what has worked or not with the questionnaire and during the interaction with the interviewees.Teaching tools
