00206 - Hydraulic Construction

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Docente: Sara Simona Cipolla
  • Credits: 4
  • SSD: ICAR/02
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture and Building Engineering (cod. 0940)

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of the mechanics of fluids and hydraulics, with particular regard to pressure and free surface flow conditions (Hydraulics Module). Furthermore will be analyzed issues related to urban hydrology, water supply systems and sewer systems (Hydraulic Construction Module).

Course contents

A prior knowledge and understanding of hydraulics is required to attend with profit this course.

Fluent spoken and written Italian is a necessary pre-requisite: all lecture and tutorials, and all study materials will be in Italian.

Course contents are:

Water distribution systems

Water demand and time variations. General schemes of water supply. Captation from groundwater, rivers and reservoirs. Design and analysis of water adduction. Storage reservoirs design. Design and analysis of water distribution systems: dead-end and loop networks. Conduits material and pipes joint. Valves in water networks. Water distribution inside buildings.

Sewer systems

Overview of drainage systems and network types. Wastewater flow analysis. Statistical analysis of rainfall observation. IDF curves. Storm water flow analysis: Rational method. Design of drainage systems: pipelines cross-sections, flow velocity bounds. Pipe materials. Manholes. Gully pots. Combined sewer overflows. Detention ponds and first flush tanks. Sewer inside buildings. Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUD). Design of systems for rainfall harvesting.

Teaching methods

Lessons in class and exercises. In the exercises are illustrated, with numerical examples, the types of exercises proposed during the written test.

Assessment methods

The learning assessment aims verifying the achievement of learning objectives, in particular the basic concepts for the design of water supply systems and sewer systems. The assessment method consists of a final written test of 2 hours (use of books and lecture notes are not allowed) consisting of theoretical questions, true/false quizzes and exercises for the design of water networks and drainage systems. Students might also decide to take an oral exam in addition to the written test. A failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts of the subject. The final grade of the integrated course 18617 - Hydraulics and Urban Hydraulic Structures is defined as the average of the marks obtained in modules 00490-Hydraulics and 00206-Hydraulic Construction.
