Course contents

The objective of the course is to supply students with the basic techniques and instruments which are necessary for professional interpreting. Class activities will include public-speaking exercises, information selection and memorization tasks, psychological training, sight translation and close tests. Students will have the opportunity to play the role of interpreter in situations close to real interpreting. Real material will be used. The course will focus on topics such as exibitions, company presentations, trade and economic relations, official visits, environment and ecology, social problems. Further areas of study may be agreed upon with students during the course. 

A mother tongue tutor will be present.

Lectorate

Lectorate frequency is compulsory and is part of the student’s general timetable. Lectorate lessons include reading and listening exercises; grammar exercises; vocabulary strengthening; (dialogic and monologic) oral and written (summary) production training. Themes will be closely linked with the ones dealt with in the Russian Language and Mediation Course III. Apart from reading and analysing Russian narrative texts, the lectorate programme includes grammar issue training. Lexical issues are about political and administrative organisation, culture, education, as well as daily life in Russia today. Focus on developing listening comprehension skills and reformulation of oral texts. Lectorate is an integral part of the course. The topics dealt with during the lectorate will be subject to verification during examinations.

 

Readings/Bibliography

As for bibliographic reference, students may address the teacher.
However, reading of both Italian and Russian dailies and periodicals is recommended. Consultation of websites in Russian is also recommended.

Teaching methods

Preparatory exercises of memorization, synthesis and oral rearrangement. Negotiation interpretation exercises. Students will have the opportunity to develop the role of interpreter in situations close to real negotiation interpreting, created either by using real material (radio and TV interviews, debates and dialogues recorded on CD and/or DVD), or through simulation of communication events organized during lessons, and inspired by the real profession. Before facing a given area of study, its terminological aspects will be analyzed by preparing specific glossaries.

Assessment methods

 The exam will consist of a real interpretation test in which the student will play the interpreter in a dialogue or speech on a specific subject + 2 short sight translations (RU>IT and IT>RU). A glossary on a specific subject is required.

Lectorate

Written section: summery. Oral section: conversation on the topics dealt with during the lectorate.

Teaching tools

Audio/videotaped speeches, authentic conference speeches and documentation. Paper documents for sight translation.
